cat-eye photoshoot

My friend Kirstie was such a wonderful sport to volunteer her time for me to test out a dramatic cat-eye makeup look :)
She has one of the most strikingly beautiful faces I’ve ever seen and her edginess really makes this work on her! I used a purple base (MAC Macroviolet Fluidline) to let some of that colour peek beneath all the dark blacks. I laid down black eyeshadow in the shape of a cateye and blended it out – at the lashline and into the creaseline, leaving the lid space. I outlined with Blacktrack Fluidline to make it appear more stark and bold. Bring the liner into the inner corners and on the bottom lashline.  I added a touch of highlight pigment on the browbone and on the lids. Added lashes, filled in brows, and applied a neutral pink lipcolour.
For cheeks I contoured with MAC Harmony blush to bring out her wonderful cheekbones. Blush used is a MAC mineral blush – very buildable and nicely pigmented!

simple look

IT HAS BEEN A WHILE! sooo sorry for my absence. The idiot that I am, spilt water into my macbook and it died a gradual death… which meant I have been completely out of commission! I ordered a new macbook pro and i love it, but I also had to scrounge around for Photoshop CS5, andddd of course I lose my Canon EOS installation CD so I couldn’t upload camera photos…. Anyway, excuse me while I catch up!

A while ago I wanted a polished look but I didn’t want to use too many products. I split my time between my own apartment and my parents’ so I hate lugging around my makeup collection. To make it easy, I just used Blacktrack Fluidline to draw thick liner and winged it out. Added some lashes to complete this very fast, simple, but complete look!
Reviews coming up soon =)

quick night look

I have been going out more than I’d like to admit lately… but the good news is, I can get my makeup ready in just over 10 minutes! Just with practise, I’ve simplified the “eyeshadow as liner look” that still looks like a lot of effort was put in!
With a pencil tip brush, I sweep in matte black shadow into my crease and then fill my lids as with this shade as well. A little bit on the lower lashline too. I blend out the crease with a matte red (MAC Till Daybreak) and MAC Phloof in the inner corners. Black gel liner, white liner on the waterline, mascara – done!
For cheeks I used MAC Ladyblush blushcreme and MAC Harmony blush (matte brown) into the hallows of my cheeks for contouring.
Lip colour I used MAC Morange and MAC Pink Lemonade Lipglass.
It appears I’ve used a lot of MAC in this look… but don’t worry a less expensive alternative will always work!

wearable weekdays

Keeping looks wearable for school or work usually involves neutral tones – but as I’ve mentioned I do like to amp it with some colour on the lower lashline (for example, teal liner!) I swipe a wash of neutral shimmery shadow (my go-to.. MAC Woodwinked) and a dusting of white in the tear ducts. Winged out my liner slightly (Blacktrack Fluidline) and of course your favourite mascara. For cheeks, I decided to try out my Smashbox O-glow – this stuff comes out a clear gel and then flushes pink upon skin contact. It’s quite a cool blush but it feels a tad greasy, so not a favourite. For lips I dabbed a bit of MAC Morange lipstick (bright coral orange… dab lightly, a little goes a long way!) and topped it off with MAC Lipglass Live and Dye.

cool-tone colours

The look I did over the weekend for Putri’s eyes used a lot of cool-tone eye shadows. Primed lids and first did a wash of bright matte pink around the crease area. The importance of most colourful looks is to build layers! I dabbed my brush into 3 different shades of purple (this adds dimension to your look) and blended it on top of the pink, being sure to still let some of that pink show! Blend this purple on the lower lashline as well. I deepened the outer corners with black and navy blue, then applied a shimmery blue right on top of the lids. Highlight with a bright white (or pink if you wish) in the inner corners. Black liner and bold lashes to complete the eye makeup.
Don’t overpower colourful eyemakeup with bold lips – I dabbed and blended MAC Myth lipstick (very pale, matte flesh tone) and applied sheer red gloss on top (E.L.F Hypershine Gloss in Vixen) and just a dab of MAC Lipglass in Live & Dye just to the center of the lips.

eyeshadow as liner

For nights out, I draw my black liner thick. Because I am monolidded, I mean very thick. Something different I decided to try out is thick lining using black eyeshadow – it makes for a good smokey eye too :)
Base colour I used my go-to neutral shadow MAC Woodwinked, and darkened the crease with brown and black (as I usually do)- and blend/highlight. To create a sharp wing for your liner, place masking tape so that the edge lines up with your lower lashine. This creates a clean crisp cat eye, very effective. Line with the black shadow and blend for a smokey look. I used Fluidline to cast a thin line as close to my upper lashline as possible. I then applied MAC Liquidlast to waterline (as it will stay all night!) and blended some more black shadow on the lower lashine. Highlight inner corners as per usual, and mascara! Lip colour is a bold MAC Big Bow from Hello Kitty collection. Blush is a bright pink blushcreme from MAC – they are longlasting and very pigmented.

eye makeup and glasses

Most days I just want to bum around in sweats.. who doesn’t. I don’t really want to look “made-up” if I’m going somewhere casual, so I’ll opt to just keep my glasses on spare the effort of contact lenses. This doesn’t mean you still can’t look polished :)
Glasses, and especially thick frames, can cover up a lot of your eye makeup… mostly the upper lashline. Thus, you can work the lower lashline. For example, don’t skip out on mascara-ing your lower lashes, and apply a pale liner to your waterline to open up your eyes. And of course fill in your brows.. it makes a big difference for glasses wearers.

For this look, I tried to keep neutral colours. Base colour MAC Goldmine, crease colour MAC Antiqued (deep bronze shimmer). I applied matte black to the “outer V” to deepen the crease, and of course MAC Phloof (shimmer white) in the inner corners/tear ducts. You can’t tell with my eyes closed, but I did wear white liner on the waterline, and lined beneath that with MAC Humid (dark green) for some colour.
Who says you cant look nerdy and chic? :)

quicktip: drugstores

WZHU MAKEUP/PHOTO is back in business for the season =) so expect new makeup looks coming soon!

For something I think we all should take to heart- don’t believe that expensive makeup = good makeup!
I know sometimes I get fooled into thinking that a higher end product MUST be the better alternative… this is not always true!
There are some things that I mostly go into a MAC store for (eg. liners), or I just like hauling at Sephora (who wouldn’t? :P). But take my advice… if there’s an alternative you can buy at the drugstore, give it a try! In fact, drugstores are my definite go-to for mascaras! Most drugstore brand mascaras are comparable to highend brands… and many are even significantly BETTER. I am also a big fan of drugstore lipsticks & glosses. I can afford to have 60 or so lip products in my collection because you can find great deals on them!
You can be a satisfied makeup junkie on all drugstore products… be a savvy shopper!

love, wz

quicktip: Starbucks napkins!

Run out of oil blotting papers?
Next time you’re at Starbucks, grab a bunch of their napkins. It’s a great substitute, I’ve tried :)

Sephora Flashy Liners, nothing but good things!

Apologies for my lack of photos lately… I’ve been at my parents and have been virtually makeup-free and without my camera. I’ll make it up next week :)
Now for the review…

Although I like my selection of gel and liquid liners, having a pencil liner for me is a must-have for those lazy days when I only have a second to define my lashline… and of course to use on waterline. I have spent a lot of time reading up reviews for good waterproof liners, and Sephora Flashy Liners were up there. So of course I picked one up on my visit – I got one in Flashy Green, nice for a pop of bright colour.
Really guys, with these liners you can’t go wrong.
Consistency – excellent, glides on very soft and creamy.
Staying power – great! Pigmentation stays its Flashy Green.
Waterproof – sure is!  Stays long on my waterline!
Pigmentation – nice and solid, no complaints
Price – $10, an inexpensive alternative to MAC Powerpoint, a comparable counterpart. You can often even find them in sets at a great price.
I highly recommend these liners :) I want to buy the entire selection! <3
